Russian programmers again recognized as the best in the world

Russian students-programmers from St. Petersburg state University and MIPT smarter than the representatives of the most advanced universities in the world. On may 19 they won gold at the international world team championship on programming ACM ICPC in Phuket.

The MIPT team consisting of: Konstantin Semenov, Ivan Smirnov, trainer Mikhail Tikhomirov, Artem Zhuk (left to right)

Only the final was attended by 128 of the best universities in the world. Each team consisted of three students (to participate allowed students of higher educational institutions not older than 24 years, as well as graduate students first year of study).

The teams were given five hours on the computer and from eight to twelve tasks, which are written in English. Interestingly, all the teams had to write solutions not just text, and the programming languages C, C++ or Java and send them to the test server.

The best of the best this year were the guys from St. Petersburg state University who led the Quartet of gold medalists (for each step of the podium was at four universities). Behind them there are: Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Harvard and MIPT. The silver was divided between the University of Warsaw, Massachusetts Institute of technology (MIT), the University ITMO of Saint-Petersburg and the Ural Federal University. Well, bronze “took” Wroclaw University, Nizhny Novgorod, NNGU im. Lobachevsky, Lviv national University. Ivan Franko and Fudan University (China).

Guys from St. Petersburg state University was the only team, who decided 11 tasks, MIPT, solved 10 problems. In addition to the number of tasks assessed and their rate decision. For example, if the first task is solved in 30 seconds, the participants receive 30 penalty points if faster, then less, etc. If second problem is solved at around 55 seconds, it does +55 points to the existing penalty. All of this is added to the formula for calculating the winner.

As practice shows, told us in MIPT, all winners after graduation easily get high positions in IT companies such as IBM or Microsoft. Thus, they “jump” from very high up the corporate ladder. There is also a monetary remuneration (exact amount to clarify it’s not possible).

The next championship will be held in 2017 in Rapid city, South Dakota, USA.
