Moscow demanded that Euronews apology for lying about the deportation of Crimean Tatars

The representative of the foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova demanded an official apology from the TV channel Euronews, which is posted on its website false information about the number of deported Crimean Tatars under Stalin’s regime and the ban on commemorative events on the Peninsula.

In his blog on Facebook Zakharov drew attention to the fact that the Russian version of the material on the website of the Euronews TV channel is different from English. Thus, article in Russian says that more than 200 thousand Tatars were deported from Crimea in the period from 18 to 20 may 1944.

However, for English-speaking audiences Euronews has prepared another text. Journalists in it ten times increased the number of deportees. “Crimean Tatars remember their national tragedy, the mass deportation by Stalin in may 1944 more than two million men, women and children”, – quotes Zakharova text of the article.

The representative of the foreign Ministry believes that this is not a typo. In her opinion, the extra toe was not assigned randomly, as two million in the English texts written letters. “Let’s call a spade a spade. It’s not a double standard in presenting information for different audiences, not partisanship. It’s a lie,” — said the diplomat.

Zakharova also drew attention to the words of the journalists that in “occupied Crimea” is prohibited commemorative events on the anniversary of the deportation. However, she ironically notes that “Kremlin propaganda” in the face of RIA Novosti writes about the opposite – the ceremonies associated with the 72-th anniversary of deportation of Crimean Tatars outside the Peninsula, took place in Crimea on may 18.
