Under the Crimean bridge found the tombs of progressive Muslims and Spanish coins

On the territory of the ancient burial grounds the road will pass to the construction of Crimean bridge on the Taman Peninsula in the Krasnodar region. On the territory of 26 thousand square meters on the site of the archaeological site with the provisional name “Solon-2” with Nov 2015 discovered a few settlements and burial grounds. Among them are very ancient, Dating back to the Bronze age, that is, to the III-II Millennium BC, and later — in the XVII–XVIII centuries. On the outskirts of one of the burial grounds of the Institute of Ethnology and anthropology found a hoard of 15 silver coins weighing 300 grams that were in a ceramic pot.

The Taman Peninsula was densely populated in antiquity, from the Bronze age. In antiquity the Peninsula was inhabited by Greek colonists. Many ancient settlements continued to exist in the middle ages. Once there was a village of Greeks, Turks, Cossacks.

As regards the archaeological site “Solon-2” of his examination, scientists have been particularly active in connection with the planned construction of the road on the Crimean bridge, it was important to study all the archaeological monuments in the affected areas of road construction, to preserve them for posterity.

– The data of the archaeological explorations was talking about the fact that there is a settlement of the Khazar time, – says a leading researcher of the Institute of Ethnology and anthropology Emma ZILIVINSKAYA. But excavations have shown a different picture: to the Khazar time, are separate pits, the main area is the burial ground of the XVII–XVIII centuries, belonging to the representatives of some sedentary settlements. The dead are buried according to Muslim rites, however, these were not Orthodox Muslims. In the graves found many female ornaments, vessels, household items, which is unacceptable according to the canons of the Muslim religion (usually the dead are buried without things). While we can only assume that it was the Circassians, but more accurately set membership of a burial ground after the serious analysts.

In the graves found beads, silver earrings, charms, a whole collection of rings. That people were buried in the clothes, in particular, it can be assumed on the location of the preserved stone, which was lined with sleeves dresses. Also in female graves archaeologists have found mirrors, thimbles, men’s knives. Mass find are of Turkish pipes, which has already collected a few dozen. In many graves at the head or at the feet of the corpse stood a pitcher.

One of those pitchers, though not in the grave, and next to it was an unexpected discovery – a hoard of silver coins.

– The jug was not quite normal – says Emma Zilivinskaya, – with two, not with one handle. In it we found 15 quite massive silver coins which we have identified as Spanish of the seventeenth century, but need to get them looked experts-numismatists. Taman at all times was a center of Maritime trade, because it is possible that the money was stashed in a cemetery someone from the merchants.

In total, “Salt-2” was found 150 graves, and except for early-medieval among them were five graves belonging to the early Bronze age. They skeletons are crouched in the fetal position, sometimes with rough stucco vessels. Is quite a rare find in one of the graves flint tip. President Vladimir Putin has proposed to create a Museum in Kerch was found for Taman artifacts.
