In an interview with The Independent General announced that the Russian authorities allegedly hatching plans to seize the Baltic republics, which will inevitably lead to a nuclear exchange.

To prevent this, Shirreff proposed to increase the NATO forces in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The General also said that Moscow is confident in the weakness of NATO, uses as a pretext for the invasion of the charges of infringement of the rights of Russian-speaking residents of the Baltic States.

Shirreff previously held the position of Deputy commander in chief of allied forces in Europe and retired in 2014. He later wrote the book “War with Russia: 2017”, which deals with a hypothetical military conflict between Europe and Moscow.

In February of this year Shirreff with a group of military experts presented a report that criticized the current state of the Alliance. In particular, he highlighted the failure of NATO forces to adequately confront the Russian military.

In turn, the commander of NATO in Europe General Philip Breedlove said earlier that the American soldiers if necessary, “ready to fight to defeat Russia”.
