Radar (radar) system of missile warning “Dnepr”, located in Sevastopol, will be restored. The reason for this decision was the increased activity of NATO ships and the United States in the Mediterranean and Black seas.
About the plans of the Russian defense Ministry to restore the Crimean radar station “Dnipro” newspaper “Izvestiya” reported the representative of the military-industrial complex (MIC). According to the newspaper, the upgraded facility will be capable of detecting launches of hypersonic cruise and ballistic missiles from the Black and Mediterranean seas.
Station “Dnepr” has not been used for more than ten years. After the collapse of the Soviet Union the object was ceded to Ukraine. The loss was compensated in 2013 by the commissioning of new generation radar “Voronezh-DM” near Armavir. She completely blocked off the area of control of the two remaining Ukrainian stations in Sevastopol and Mukachevo, and also radar station in Azerbaijan.
A source in the Russian defense industry said that the Sevastopol station “Dnepr” will receive the equipment in the centimeter range, thus complementing the facility in Armavir, operating in the UHF range.
The radar provides all-round defense of Russia against missile attacks, says Professor Academy of military Sciences Vadim Kozyulin. For example, the American Tomahawk missile fired from the Mediterranean sea, could reach Moscow in 2 hours, which is enough to intercept.
The defense Ministry proposed two options for the restoration of the station “Dnepr”, the newspaper notes. First — road: the construction of the facility from scratch using the technologies used in the new stations of the system of missile warning of the type “Voronezh”. On this version insist the military.
The second is cheaper, involves the installation of equipment remaining from the unfinished Soviet era in the same Sevastopol station “Dnepr” near Irkutsk. In the framework of the budget savings he is now preferable.Related posts:
