Cannes: the audience stood half an hour to see the bus driver

A couple of hours I had to defend some journalists and guests of the festival to catch a showing of the new competitive film “Paterson” by Jim Jarmusch about the bus driver. Many never made it.

Still from the film “Paterson” by Jim Jarmusch

Jim Jarmusch has captured the everyday life of a young and modest man, who early in the morning, goes to work, drives a city bus, and then returns home, where it waits for a very extravagant woman and funny dog. Blessed while not at home, she thinks of how she would dress for his return, bakes dozens of cakes. They are certainly the coloring match her next outfit. The guy barely eats it all, because cooking is his favorite and still can’t, but he pretends that everything is very tasty. During working hours the bus driver is watching the passengers and what is happening in the city every minute, and also writes poetry. That’s all. But everything is done in the style of Jarmusch – funny and very touching.

What’s interesting is that a young Russian filmmaker from Irkutsk Anastasia Zverkova is a short documentary film “Countryman” of similar content. His hero is African. All his life he wanted to get into the Soviet Union, learned at home and came to us. And now drives a tram, and in the evenings at the local TV station of Irkutsk citizens according to the weather reports. Everything is true, nothing fictional, filmed by a real person, a poet at heart, like the hero Jarmusch.

And at the same time, while there was a film in the Russian pavilion presented his short film “afloat” a producer and Director Sergey Sarkisov – the person belongs to the twenty Russian list “Forbs” (made a fortune in the insurance business – MK). His son Nick Sarkisov became the creative producer of the film. In the past, he is a plastic surgeon, and now, like his father, passionate about cinema. (A year ago he, too, was represented in Cannes for his own film “Red”)

Sarkisov Sr. became a Director in 65 years. For this, he graduated from the Higher directing courses, where he studied with Irakli Kvirikadze. And now a little-a lot of dreams to film “the Brothers Karamazov” and “the Life of Klim Samgin”. “I’m ready to shoot “War and peace”, but the BBC beat me to it, made a fine film, – says Sergey Sargsyan. – I dream to film Hemingway. This is a real man’s writer. But I don’t like hunting and fishing. Don’t understand people who still decorate their homes with dead bodies of animals. In our family everything is built unusual. I, for example, in 50 years got a tattoo, after, as did my son. He was an excellent surgeon, but became a Director. We could invite the Director from the side, but as my dad says, the money should stay in the family. Why limit ourselves to its terms. By the way, present in the hall and my mom. Her film “afloat” not liked”.

After this presentation participants on the Mediterranean sea, drank a glass of wine and tasted the snacks made gracefully, as it is not always the case on this coast. It was necessary to invite Jim Jarmusch: because the story just for him -a touching and exciting.
