The militants banned in Russia grouping “Islamic state” (ISIS/ISIL/DAISH) are actively fighting with Syrian government troops near the recently liberated Palmyra. Restless another important Syrian cities — Aleppo, – where the regular army and members of various opposing Assad movements continue a fierce battle. And the world community at that time unsuccessfully trying to overcome the contradictions on which the Syrian opposition movements to consider terrorist and which are not. What is behind all these processes? This “MK” said a senior researcher at the Centre for Arab and Islamic studies, Institute of Oriental studies Boris DOLGOV.
“Intensification of anti-government groups in Syria and those who are behind them, primarily linked to their desire to show that they have the strength not only to continue the fight, but also to conduct offensive operations, this kind of attempt to take revenge for the successes of the Syrian army,” – said the expert.
In his opinion, played a role, and the agreement on the cessation of hostilities, it gave the opportunity to some groups joined the truce to replenish its Arsenal, to gain strength.
“A big role here I continue to play, of course, the foreign sponsors of these movements, who intend by all means to achieve its goal — the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, “that they failed to do in the negotiations in Geneva where we heard categorical statements on this subject”, – said Boris Dolgov.
As for Palmyra, the actions of the IG in the area of the city is associated primarily with the strategic value of the area, where many important roads, for example, in HOMS, recalled our interlocutor: “Yes, ISIS suffered heavy losses, but it is not suppressed — there is a feed from Turkey, from Jordan, so the jihadists are trying to recover lost ground. But hardly it is possible now: the Syrian military a strong position, and helps the Russian side, so, say, a new capture of Palmyra. But keep fighting, as we see, ISIS is still capable, and, therefore, the goals stated in the beginning of the Russian operation – including the complete suppression of the group – has not yet been reached”.
And if the odds are completely suppressed by ISIS continues, with other groups fared worse: the UN security Council did not support the proposed by Russia resolution on the inclusion in the list of terrorist movements “Jaish al-Islam and Ahrar al-sham”.
“There are a number of countries supporting certain armed groups fighting in Syria: US, UK, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey… In fact, and “Jaish al-Islam and Ahrar al-sham” affiliated with “al-Nusra Front” (banned in Russia as a terrorist organization), and with IG, but NATO States and some of their middle Eastern partners, including the Gulf monarchies, support these movements, calling them “moderate” opposition to overthrow the Assad regime. In this regard, I do not think that the contradictions of these countries with Russia about the inclusion of certain movements in the list of terrorist will be overcome”, – said Boris Dolgov.Related posts:
