Washington has condemned the sentencing of journalists in Turkey

The U.S. state Department expressed concern about the convictions of opposition journalists in Turkey.

“The US has issued today a conviction in the case of the chief editor of the Turkish opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet Jana Dündar and head of the publications Bureau in Ankara Erdem Gul”, – stated in the message of Department.

Washington has urged Ankara “to support independent and unobstructed media” and “to follow constitutional obligations and OSCE commitments in the field of democracy”.

Earlier it was reported that a court in Istanbul sentenced the chief editor of the opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet for 5 years and 10 months in prison, the correspondent of the newspaper Erdem Gul to 5 years.
