Abe made the proposal to Putin on the Kuril Islands

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said after three hours of talks in Sochi with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, offered him a new approach to the problem of the Kuril Islands.

As RIA “Novosti” with reference to the Japanese Agency Kyodo, Shinzo Abe after talks with Putin told reporters that Moscow offered a new approach to solving the problem of the Kuril Islands.

While the report said that Abe and Putin agreed on the resolution of the problem with this approach.

However, the Japanese media never revealed what exactly is this new approach. Earlier, the press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said that this issue will be discussed, but to expect immediate progress is not.

As reported the head of Russian foreign Ministry Sergei Lavrov, who also attended the meeting, during the meeting of leaders of Russia and Japan the question of removing sanctions was not raised. However, Ukraine, Putin and Abe discussed the Russian leader gave explanations on the current situation, saying that Kiev does not fulfill the Minsk agreement, reports TASS. In addition, it became known that Moscow and Tokyo have agreed to an intensive dialogue at the highest level and the beginning of implementation of major investment projects. Also discussed was the situation on the Korean Peninsula and Putin and Abe agreed that the DPRK cannot claim the status of nuclear power. At the same time Moscow expressed concern with the placement in the region ABOUT the United States. As explained Lavrov, Russia would like to have guarantees not directed missile defense system against Russia.

In addition, Lavrov said that the leaders of Russia and Japan discussed the problems of the peace Treaty and supported the ongoing negotiations in the framework of the MFA.

As Lavrov said, the next round of consultations at the level of Deputy foreign Ministers on the peace Treaty will take place in June.

The Minister also added that at today’s meeting were discussed the questions that leaders want to bring to these consultations”.
