A study conducted by a group of experts from Johns Hopkins University, showed that medical errors are the cause of more than 250 thousand deaths per year in the United States, approximately 9.5 percent of all deaths in the country. The two most common by far causes of death in the United States, as in many other countries, are cardiovascular diseases and cancer, carrying off annually about 611 thousand and 585 thousand lives respectively. While sad in a three of leaders of medical errors “stick” very confident — chronic respiratory diseases, ranks the fourth, every year cause the death of 149 thousand people.

Experts note that if the two most common causes of death people very carefully researched by many scientists, medical errors much attention until now has not received. The reason that scientists consider the fact that no one applied at the state level method of collecting statistics does not imply the introduction of a medical error as “independent” causes of death. Scientists see this as a legacy of the days when the dangers associated with medical care, for human life is simply underestimated.

The specialists underline that the majority of medical errors do not indicate that the attending physician is the bad professionals, so the messages about these errors is not always must be followed by a criminal punishment (in the Russian language the concept of “medical error” and “medical crime” are clearly divided, and the first by definition cannot imply negligence or bad faith). However, the study of medical errors as a phenomenon and the search for methods of reducing mortality in their reason, researchers believe it is highly important task.
