The wreckage was found recently near city Newport of the state Rhode island in the United States is likely to belong to the ship “endeavour”, on which the famous discoverer James cook in 1770 reached Australia. Military sailor, Explorer and cartographer James cook was the commander of “endeavour” from 1768 to 1971 and carried on Board his first voyage around the world. This expedition allowed, including, to conduct observation of the transit of Venus across the disk of the Sun, which further helped to accurately calculate the distance from the sun to the Earth. Also during this trip we found out that New Zealand is not part of some continent, but two separate Islands divided by a narrow Strait, later named in honor of James cook.
“Endeavour” was a small vessel with a shallow draft. He was specially converted for expedition around the world, although the majority of ships of this design was intended for the transportation of coal. The length of the vessel was equal to 32 meters and weight was about 368 tons when fully loaded. “Endeavour was the first ship who has committed such a long voyage, during which from extremely common at the time among sailors died of scurvy not any one person.
After cook’s famous voyage the ship was renamed the “Lord Sandwich” and several times changed owners. However, until now, remained a mystery, where it was flooded. A study conducted by American specialists have shown that the ship was in 1778 by the British scuttled in shallow water in anticipation of storm Rhode island during the war of independence of the United States.
