Romania withdrew from Eurovision because of unpaid debt


High debts of the public television of Romania was the reason for the exclusion of that country’s representative from Eurovision 2016.

As reported in the statement of the Committee of the European broadcasting Union (EBU), Romania excluded from “Eurovision”. Romanian public television (TVR) has prohibited the use of the services News and Eurovision Sports News Exchanges, i.e. TVR deprived of the opportunity to share news, as well as rights to broadcast sports events.

The reason was a major debt to the organizers of the project — TVR owed 16 million Swiss francs or €14.5 million of This amount, the Romanian television are unable to pay within a specified time.

“Of course, it is very sad for both the artist chosen to represent Romania, and also for the audience,” said Executive supervisor of the contest Jon Ola sand.

Thus, although a participant from Romania Ovidiu Anton recorded a video for the song, will not perform in the second semifinal of the Eurovision song contest. Out of respect for the artist, the song will be available for download in streaming services.
