The study, which was attended by nearly 800 thousand people, showed that the presence of the spouse significantly increases the chances of survival in people with cancer. The positive effect of marriage observed in very many cases, but the degree of influence of marriage on the odds of beating the disease depends on the sex and ethnicity of the person, reported by scientists representing the University of San Diego.
The experts, who published their study in the journal Cancer, gathered information about the 470 393 389 697 men and women during the period from 2000 to 2009 was diagnosed with cancer one of the ten species recognized in the most dangerous. The researchers then tracked changes in the health status of patients prior to 2012, and compared these data with information about their family life, writes The Guardian.
Making allowances for factors such as the presence or absence of insurance, area of residence and socioeconomic status of study participants, experts came to the conclusion that people who are married, thereby improving their chances of survival. To the greatest extent marriage increases the chances of representatives of the European race not of Spanish origin — for white men who are married, the risk of dying was almost a quarter lower than that of singles, and women — about 17 percent.
Experts note that the positive effect of marriage on people’s health and, including on their chances to defeat cancer, has already been identified in the shopping of a number of previous studies conducted by different teams, but the new work is, first, allowed us to consider this influence on the example of a very large number of people, and secondly, it helped to figure out what role this phenomenon have indirect factors — gender, race and so on.
