Detection of gravitational waves was one of the main areas in which specialized scientist. Also within the scope of his scientific interests was high-precision and quantum measurements and the detection of the fundamental thermodynamic fluctuations. His research group works in the framework of the international project laser interferometer gravitational wave Observatory LIGO since 1993. This collaboration has recently been discovered for the first time gravitational waves, and this was seen by many experts worldwide as the “discovery of the century”.
Braginsky predicted the existence of the limits of coordinate measurement of a quantum origin, which are now called standard quantum limit. He has also worked on principles that would allow these limitations to be overcome.
Recently scientific Director of the Russian quantum center and member of scientific collaboration LIGO as part of a group of Moscow state University Mikhail Gorodetsky has told to the correspondent of MK in the Soviet era, Vladimir Braginsky could lead the LIGO project, however, he could not accept the proposal because it meant moving to the USA, and at that time this step would have made him a dissident in his homeland.
Vladimir Braginsky was awarded numerous awards and honorary titles in Russia and abroad. He was, including a member-correspondent of the Russian Academy of Sciences, member of the European Academy in London, foreign honorary member of the American Academy of arts and Sciences and a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States.
