Turkey announced a list of demands from Brussels, which considers it unacceptable. The President Erdogan accused the Western media of trying to “dismember and swallow” Republic. Indeed, experts say that Turkey may join the EU only to the Western part. And the risk of split of the country, encroached on the revival of the Empire, remains.
The European Parliament is preparing to publish an annual report assessing Turkey’s readiness to join the European Union. While Ankara and Brussels agreed on only 14 of 35 technical items that Turkey must fulfill to achieve the necessary for a “single European family” condition. 17 points remain locked and four are under negotiation.
“If the events will develop in the toughest scenario, when there is, it is not excluded that Turkey can be fragmented by Kurds”
Without waiting for the publication of the report, Turkey has offered europarliamentarian to make some basic edits. Minister for EU Affairs Volkan Bozkır wrote in the letter addressed to the head of the EP Martin Schulz, the head of diplomacy Federico Mogerini, European Commissioner for neighbourhood policy and enlargement Johannes Khan and the heads of the factions of the EP. In it he listed unacceptable for Ankara paragraphs of the report. Excerpts from the letter published on the official website of the Ministry.
“If in the final text of the report will be items such as a solution of the EP of April 15, 2015 regarding the events of 1915 (the Armenian genocide – ed. OPINION), the call to eliminate the Kurdistan workers ‘ party (PKK) from the list of terrorist organizations of the EU, calls for freeze of financial aid prior to the entry of Turkey into the EU or to the undiscovered new chapters in the negotiations on its EU membership, for Turkey, this report will be unacceptable,” said Bozkır.
As RIA “news” the Minister has asked European politicians to write the report “one-sided content”, which could negatively affect the negotiations on the settlement of the situation in Cyprus. And stressed that Ankara was “closely following” the preparation of the report.
Bozkır was not the first chastises Brussels. In December last year he accused EU in “the arrogant policy” against Turkey, stressing that if the EU refuse Ankara’s membership in the organization, it did not upset the Turks. Recall that the Association agreement between the EU and Turkey was signed in 1963. The application for EU membership Ankara applied in 1987. Accession negotiations started in 2005.
In turn, the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan responded to the attack on the American newspaper The New York Times, which last week accused him of “crackdown”. The Turkish leader called the publication intervention in the Affairs of the Republic, stating that the newspaper would never allow such criticism against the US authorities. In an interview to TV Show Erdogan also reminded that the Western media attacks on Turkey have “a long history”. In the past critical articles were directed against the sultans of the Ottoman Empire. This same policy, according to Erdogan, the Western media carried out now. “Who’s behind this, okay. They (the media) follow in the direction that they indicate. BBC and CNN did the same thing during the Gezi protests (mass protests in Turkey in 2013). You know, what is their purpose? They want to weaken Turkey, to dismember and swallow it. But we will not allow this to be done, they will not succeed,” assured the President.
