“Savchenko is ready to serve 23 years in Russia”

On Wednesday, the Donetsk court of Rostov region commenced debate on the case Ukrainka Hope Savchenko, accused of complicity in the murder of Russian journalists in the Luhansk region and illegally crossing the border. The charge requires the suspect to 23 years in prison and a fine of 100 thousand rubles.

The first word went to the side of the prosecution. According to prosecutors, Savchenko is an accomplice in the murder of two members of the crew VGTRK Anton Voloshin and Igor Kornelyuk, as well as an accessory in the attempted murder of the operator Viktor Denisov. The Russians voluntarily went to the Luhansk region to “objectively and impartially” perform his journalistic duty, according to prosecutors. They also believe that Savchenko encroached on people’s lives, being guided by motives of personal hatred, as it believes that Russia annexed the Crimea and invaded the Donbass. For all this the Ukrainian demand to sentence to 23 years in prison.

The prosecution believes that the suspect, having the necessary skills and equipment, climbed up the telephone tower near the village of Stukalova Balka and from there saw civilians in the village of Metalist. About it she immediately said the commander “Aydar” Sergey Melnichuk, that he gave the order to shoot innocent people with artillery. To escape from the crime scene Savchenko did not work — the Prosecutor’s office seized her at 12.30 Ukrainian time, prosecutors allege. But already on 23 June, the head LNR Igor Carpentry humanity released the Ukrainian freedom, and the suspect illegally crossed the Russian border, so as to cross the front line to return home she would not, fearing to get hit by friendly fire, prosecutors said.

In the course of his speech the state accuser recalled the suffering experienced by the survivors during the shelling of the Metallist and the death of his mother Voloshin, who was unable to accept the death of his son. In this case, since the representatives of the defense and the prosecution were not at the scene, prosecutors are encouraged to rely on the testimony of the militia, but all that said Savchenko and her supporters, “don’t stand up to scrutiny”. Also you should not trust the results of the billing phones suspect, because, says the prosecution, that day was a bad connection. Meanwhile, the billing showed that at the time of attack Metalist Savchenko was already in Lugansk.

“If the court takes more than two weeks for the verdict, I include dry hunger strike from tomorrow. I don’t wanna wait no swapping, if you change the guilty on the innocent… I am an innocent man, no exchanges, no trades, no time lag. I’m not going to wait,” he said during the debate Ukrainka.

The trial will continue on 3 March. And while “MK” asked the experts, how big is the probability that the court will agree with the proposed prosecutors punishment, and whether to serve him Savchenko in Russia:

Mikhail POGREBINSKY, Director of Kiev center of political researches and conflictology:

— Judging by the fact that the President of Russia Vladimir Putin said that before the court decision on Savchenko no exchanges or release can not be, there is reason to believe that after sentencing her can grant Amnesty or even under some pretext or other to let loose. To sit she will. I don’t think that the current diplomatic relations the exchange Savchenko on the former Russian military Alexander Alexander and Evgeny Erofeev. So it seems to me that Moscow simply demonstrate their good faith and release Savchenko. Maybe Kiev will take in response to the symmetric step, although the current Ukrainian authorities cannot be sure.

Konstantin ZATULIN, Director of Institute of CIS countries:

In this case there are two logic. The first is to reduce tensions between Russia and Ukraine and the second on the increase. In the first way it is possible to take any decision on the release of Ukrainian women, including its metabolism. But to prevent outward expansion of the internal political crisis, Ukraine is unprofitable to establish relations with Russia, Savchenko therefore deliberately goes to the aggravation, stating that he does not wish exchange. It is difficult to say what this thing will end, but if people do not want to go free, that’s his right, and he can sit at least till the end of time.
