“The European Parliament is dissatisfied with the supply of weapons to the Saudis”

The European Parliament approved made influential left faction the resolution calling to impose an embargo on deliveries of European weapons to Saudi Arabia. It is unlikely to prevent the export of arms to the Kingdom, because that will hurt the European industry. However, this resolution is a sign of strong resentment of European elites.

The European Parliament in plenary session on Thursday in Brussels by majority vote approved a resolution calling on the EU to impose an embargo on deliveries of arms of Saudi Arabia. This was announced in the faction of socialists and Democrats, who initiated the adoption of this resolution.

“Germany has a very strong lobby that will protect the supply of arms”

“Progressive Alliance of socialists and Democrats” (S&D) is the second – largest faction of the European Parliament (190 MEPs out of 751), it presents, in particular, in France, the ruling socialist party and the Social democratic party of Germany – the main opponents of the government of Angela Merkel.

The representative of the S&D explained RIA “Novosti” that the vote is “a humanitarian appeal to end the bloodshed in Yemen.” “Recognizing the fact that the Saudi Arabia-led coalition was legally intended to undertake military action, the resolution also notes that “serious allegations of violation of human rights” require the European Union to stop supplying weapons and stick to their own code of conduct on arms trade”, – said the representative of the socialist group in the European Parliament. He noted that since the beginning of coalition military operations in Yemen, only the UK issued licences for the export of arms to Saudi Arabia worth up to 3 billion pounds (3.8 billion euros).

It should be noted that, probably, business not only and not so much in response to the operation of the Saudis in Yemen.

The transfer on the eve of the armistice

Initiated by left-wing MEPs, the resolution coincided with the arrival of the aircraft the air force of Saudi Arabia to the Turkish air base “Incirlik”. Saudi F-15E should be involved in the operation of the Saudi air force, the stated purpose of which is “Islamic state”.

What made the army of Syria with the support of the Russian VKS (infographic)February 11, Saudi Arabia has offered to increase the number of its airstrikes against ISIS. The Kingdom is not part of the coalition led by the United States, but cooperates with her. Saudi Arabia heads the so-called Islamic coalition to fight terrorism. On 9 February, the foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia Adel al-Jubayr has said it is ready to send to Syria special forces in a coalition led by the USA, which, it is claimed, is fighting with ISIS. This decision, announced in Saudi Arabia, is final.

The Saudis offered to coordinate efforts with Turkey. In the USA said that it can’t support a possible ground operation in Saudi Arabia and Turkey on Syrian territory.

It seems that neither Ankara nor Riyadh do not take into account the ceasefire entering into force on 27 February. According to the newspaper VIEW, the Turkish authorities were forced to formally support the agreement Putin and Obama on a truce between Damascus and the radical opposition, because it would be strange to advocate the continuation of the war. But they did it with reservations that leave no doubt as to their displeasure. On Thursday, the head of Turkish government, Ahmet Davutoglu said that the ceasefire in Syria would not be binding on Turkey, if there is a threat to its security.
