At the next meeting of the UN security Council, the representative of Russia held a historical perspective, to show – no one broke the UN Charter more frequently and more blatantly than the United States. And any consequences for Washington that didn’t. In this regard, Ukraine’s attempts to expose Russia’s leading violator of the Statute is ridiculous.
The UN Charter entered into force 24 October 1945. According to the basic document, the member countries of this international organization “shall fulfill in good faith undertaken under this Charter obligations”, “shall settle their international disputes by peaceful means” and “refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other way”. This is stated in the very first Chapter. But all this in theory. Because any, even not very interested in politics and history a man will be quick to call a lot of cases, when after 25 October 1945, the UN members refused to “fulfil in good faith their commitments” fighting, threatening force and applying it to other States with various goals.

The representative of Ukraine Volodymyr Yelchenko, speaking in the Security Council, has accused Russia of violating the UN Charter. And it’s “illegal occupation of Crimea and aggression in Eastern Ukraine”, and “the rapid militarization of the occupied Peninsula.” While Yelchenko urged to punish Russia, however, without specifying exactly how. “We are committed to the principle of the peaceful resolution of the conflict. However, the desire to achieve it and regain lost confidence does not mean that we will tolerate violation of the principles of the UN. This would be the wrong historical lesson, is detrimental to European and international security. Violations should not remain unpunished” – summed up the Ukrainian representative.
For its part, Russia has repeatedly noted that the reunification with Crimea was held the referendum among the population of the Peninsula, despite the fact that Kosovo’s secession was conducted using military force without any referendums. Similar examples of change of jurisdiction of the territory are Goa and DIU, India selected in Portugal, as well as the expansion of the territory of Israel at the expense of neighbouring States.
All these examples cited are not well known. Apparently, therefore, the first Deputy of Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Pyotr Ilyichev decided to answer a “Express review” the most flagrant examples of violations of the Charter by the US and the UK, of which the world has already forgotten.
The next year after the signing of the UN Charter, Britain bombed the Yemeni city of Harib (note that in 1958, the bombardment was repeated). The Security Council condemned this action in resolution 188, “stressing the incompatibility of reprisals with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter”. In the same year the international court of justice “in the first in its history, the judgment in the Corfu channel case recognized the fact of violation by great Britain of the sovereignty of Albania”.
